Do you like dark fairy tales? If so, then Piper by Carmen Erickson is the book for you! It's based on the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Just a remind of the fairy tale: The Pied Piper plays his pipe to lure the rats away from town. When the townsfolk refuse to pay him, he lures the children away instead. So, like most of the original fairy tales, the story is pretty dark.

Toeing the line of horror, Erickson puts a modern twist on the story without the graphic violence, gore, language, or sex.

Book Summary

Monsters aren't always strangers in the shadows. Sometimes they're the ones closest to you.

Rae Piper never wanted to be Hamel's rat catcher. She's as timid as the vermin she traps, scurrying away when something bigger comes along. But she has had enough of being a victim. She's creating an elixir that will give her the ability to stand up for herself and heal all her broken places.

The potion is unconventional, and it may blur a few lines, but it's already making a difference. With only a few more ingredients to procure, Rae no longer buckles under the demands of the ungrateful farming community.

When children disappear--quickly reappearing with no memory of the bizarre procedures done to them--the people of Hamel forget about their rat problem. They

fear what else may be lurking in the cornfields. And now, Rae fears what may be lurking inside of her.
